The Big Issue was founded in 1991 with a mission to tackle poverty and homelessness through enterprise. Over the years, the organization has grown into one of the UK’s leading social enterprises, offering dignified income opportunities to people facing homelessness. In 2023, more than 900 new vendors joined the ranks, collectively earning over £4 million by selling the magazine. This opportunity allows vendors to earn a legitimate income, maintain independence, and work their way out of poverty. Beyond the magazine, The Big Issue Group also runs initiatives such as Big Issue Invest, which supports over 140 social enterprises and charities, and Big Issue Recruit, which helps people overcome barriers to employment. With a vision to reach 11 million people by 2027, The Big Issue’s mission continues to expand. Through its work, the organization is not just addressing the symptoms of poverty, but also creating long-term solutions by investing in housing, education, and health.
